60 ways to look young & greart feel

'Beauty is what health and happiness look like on the outside,' Good Housekeeping told readers in 1916.

Our advice has changed little since because we've always extolled the fundamentals: The right diet, exercise and spirit promote long life - and keep you looking and feeling young. (Of course, a fabulous haircut, lipstick, and the right pair of jeans can't hurt, either.)

Here's the ultimate clock-resetting guide - beauty how-to and health must-do.

Mind your brainThese strategies will help keep you sharp-witted(and healthy, too!) throughout your life

Drink up

Your coffee, that is. Swedish and Finnish researchers found that moderate consumption of coffee (3-5 small cups a day) cuts the risk of dementia by 65 percent.

Get moving

Middle-aged women and men who exercise 5-6 times a week (brisk walking is okay) are far less likely to develop mild cognitive impairment later in life.

Check your numbers

High cholesterol in your 40s can up your chances of developing Alzheimer's later in life, researchers reported at a 2008 meeting of the American Academy of Neurology.

Also Keep an eye on

Your high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Low levels are linked to memory loss and dementia, a University College, London, study of 3,673 participants found.

Watch your weight

Obesity can increase the dementia risk by 80 percent, a Johns Hopkins, US, study found. Most dangerous: fat around your middle.

Be a groupie
Payoffs from having a circle of friends or people you see regularly at a club or other gathering:
Lower blood pressure
Delayed memory loss
Reduced risk of recurrent stroke and even the common cold

Save your skin

Choose the right products but follow through with some mustdos as well... Your chest is thin-skinned, making it susceptible to sun damage. to renew it, gently exfoliate regularly with a face scrub. Wear a hat that has at least a three-inch brim in order to shade your face. or carry a parasol. on cold days, give your face extra protection with a super-rich thick moisturiser. Use sunscreen with a minimum spf of 15 - no matter where you live or what your skin colour, use every day, whether it's winter or summer. and don't forget the after-sun face wash.

Keep an eye on your vision

Dark green leafy vegetables are prime sources of both lutein and zeaxanthin, plant pigments that protect your eyes from uv damage. make lettuce salads - and make sure spinach is on the menu, too.

Happy birthday!
Celebrating one of these milestones? Gift yourself new cosmetics and a new look. Move beyond the bare essentials.

Don't hold back - treat yourself to...

AT 30 tinted moisturisers, loose body powders and shimmers.
AT 40 lengthening mascara, eyelid primer.
AT 50 rosy blush, glowy foundation.
AT 60 shimmery shadow, hydrating lipstick.

Dress code

7 fashion tricks that will make you look younger-instantly

1. Try the new black - It's actually black and white; the combination makes you look sophisticated but still playful.
2. Experiment with a new trend - It updates your look and gives you a more youthful vibe.
3. Learn the power of shapewear - They can give you a sleeker line by invisibly smoothing the areas that bulge out a bit. A more supportive bra adds lift - and subtracts years.
4. Show some leg - Who said that once you're 40, hems should be below the knee? At the knee or just above is most flattering.
5. Skip the Mommy jeans - A dark wash, lower waist, and slimmer-cut jeans will give you the impression of legs you had in high school.
6. Go casual - A T-shirt under your jacket instead of a buttondown shirt, for example, can make you look younger.
7. Keep it in proportion - A slim pant, paired with a longer tunic, will take away years (and conceal extra pounds).

Go fishFor omega-3-rich sources. The fatty acids in these cold-water fish fight inflammation (precursor to heart disease, arthritis, diabetes) and boost mood.

Best high-in-fat:
  • Salmon (canned is fine)
  • Mackerel
  • Sardines
  • Pomfret
  • Rohu
If you can't find these fish, or your tastes are more turf than surf, then take fish oil supplements containing 500mg of EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid). Seven Seas Seacod and Maxepa are locally available brands. While you can get omega-3s from plant sources, they're in a form that don't give you similar protection.

Love lessonsA study conducted at Columbia and Yale Universities found that elderly women who named their husbands as their primary confidants had a reduced risk of dying over the next six years. Bonus: Their husbands lived longer, too.The give-and-take of couple-dom may help keep the neurons firing, say Scandinavian researchers whose study of 1,400 men and women found that people who live alone at mid-life are twice as likely to develop cognitive impairment later in life as against those who are paired up.

A hand up

Pure lemon juice is one of the finest things for the hands,' Good Housekeeping reported in 1897, foreshadowing today's fruit-acid craze. While citric acid remains a great slougher, here are two more smooth moves: To avoid chapping, always dry hands thoroughly and follow with a hand cream. Keep gloves in your kitchen and bathrooms, to protect your hands whenever you're washing or cleaning.

Build a better memory
Our ability to commit new information to memory - and then retrieve it when we need it - slows down over the years.

To minimise the decline:

Practise paying attention Forcing yourself to observe and recall the details of your day - which tie did your husband wear? Did the supermarket cashier have her hair up or brushed back - sharpens your memory, even if you never need the information.

Watch TV, or unwind in whatever way works for you - a long walk, a chat with a girl friend. Stress hormones (cortisol) may interfere with encoding and retrieving information; as you age, chronic elevated cortisol levels are linked to memory impairment.

Do crossword puzzles, or learn a new instrument or language. Mentally challenging activities build fresh connections in your brain, creating "cognitive reserves" that may protect memory later in life.

Shine on

'The price of a head of good hair is never ending vigilance,' warned Good Housekeeping in 1910. Today, thanks to new techniques and products, you can drop your guard but keep your looks.

1. Gray hair, which can be coarse, needs extra conditioning. Try hair products which soften hair. Hot oil treatments are still your best bet.
2. Hair becomes drier as you age; keep it healthy-looking with frequent trims and deep-conditioning.

A cut above

Ask your hair stylist for bangs. They look young and fun, and hide forehead lines.Make waves. Stick-straight hair can look severe (read: older); gentle curls soften the contours of your face.

Short cuts create the illusion of more hair. If you prefer to keep your hair long, add face-framing layers for a subtle lift.

A la smart menu

'Proper diet? will tend to ward off diseases,' Good Housekeeping said in 1919. Today, research has identified specific foods that can help you stay healthy and happy:? Berries of all hues are rich in antioxidants. They combat chemicals that can cause cell-damage and chronic inflammation. Spinach and other dark leafy greens deliver Vitamin K, which strengthens bones. Red wine contains resveratrol, an antioxidant, inflammation-deterrent, and artery-protector. Curd and other dairy products are a terrific source of bone-building protein and calcium.

In a Japanese study conducted recently, eating 1/4 cup of curd a day led to a 50 percent reduction in tooth loss, possibly because of the probiotics in curd. Whole grains can protect against diabetes, heart disease, stroke, colon cancer, and gum disease. Dark chocolate helps keep your arteries functioning well. But have no more than 42gm a day. Too much will pack on the heartdamaging kilos.

Keeping lips luscious

Whatever your challenge - dryness, shape - there is a solution.

Lift droopy corners, apply a basic colour first, then go over the centre of lips with a slightly deeper shade.Prevent the lipstick from melting away into lines. Use a pencil to line lips before you apply lipstick. Then, avoid too-creamy or glossy formulations, which tend to migrate or melt into those lines.

Soften your pout. Gently rub a warm, damp washcloth over your lips to slough dead skin. Follow with a balm.

What's so funny about that
A University of Maryland, US, research found that laughing can increase blood flow by 22 percent and may protect against heart problems. It also relieves stress.

As the crow's(feet) fly
In 1931, Good Housekeeping referred to them as those "hateful little lines," and advised - as a deterrent - avoiding 'visual strains of all kinds,' including 'lack of glasses when they are not needed.' Besides not smoking, here's how you can minimise the dreaded crinkles:
After you've washed your face, pat around your eyes to dry the delicate skin - rubbing stretches it.
Even if you have oily skin and don't use a face cream, moisturise around your eyes twice a day. Apply moisturiser with your ring finger; it's your weakest one and thus least likely to cause damage to your eyes, or result in wrinkles.

Master your metabolism
You'll reverse middle-aged spread - and help keep your body slim and strong for years to come. Shed pounds slowly Crash dieting leads to greater loss of metabolism-boosting muscle. A fast-like diet will drop the average woman's metabolic rate by at least 25 percent.

Pump iron
Adding weight training to your cardio routine helps you avoid losing the 2.3kg muscle that otherwise disappear every decade, simply from getting older.
Switch it up
Trying different routines keeps muscles from getting bored - they have to work in new(challenging) ways.

4 Eye-Openers1. Curl your lashes.
2. Cover dark undereye circles without telltale chalkiness - apply powder foundation in a shade that matches your skin tone to the darkened areas, then pat with a damp sponge.
3. Liner trick - choose a creamy eyeliner pencil. Hard pencils can pull at delicate skin.
4. Because of its texture, the skin around your eyes looks youngest with just a bare minimum of setting powder.

What Do You Mean Low-Intensity Training Isn't The Best For Fat Burning?

But how can this possibly be? Everywhere you look, it's always said that long-duration, low-intensity training is best for fat loss. All high-intensity work does is burn carbohydrates, right?

Wrong.

After reading this article, I guarantee you'll develop a new respect for high-intensity cardio training for fat loss.

Low-intensity exercise is defined as working at a heart rate of about 60% to 65% of your maximum heart rate (which is equal to 220 - your age = maximum heart rate, thus if you are 20 years old, 220 - 20 = 200 max HR). High-intensity exercise is defined as working at about 75 to 85% or more of your maximum heart rate.

Using the previous example for maximum heart rate (max HR=200), working at 60% of your max HR would be 120 beats per minute and 80% of that would be 160 beats per minute.

There are several reasons low-intensity exercise is normally recommended for fat loss.

1. It's easy - In many cases people who are trying to lose fat don't always feel energetic enough to do hard training due to the caloric deficit (a.k.a. diet) that they are on. In these cases, just sticking to an exercise program can be hard enough, never mind making the exercise itself challenging.

2. It's low risk - A personal trainer generally can't go wrong by recommending low-intensity exercise to clients. Even the most out of shape person can usually do low-intensity cardio training safely. While this is certainly appropriate advice for novice trainers, it does not necessarily apply to the more experienced trainer when it comes to effective training.

3. It burns a higher percentage of calories from fat - this is very true: exercising at a lower intensity does burn a higher percentage of calories from fat than high-intensity exercise. But, as I will explain, this does not necessarily mean you're going to burn more fat.

Let's crunch some numbers to show you exactly what I mean when I say high-intensity exercise burns more fat.

Low-intensity training burns about 50% fat for energy while high-intensity training burns about 40% fat for energy. This is not a huge difference.

Say, for example, walking for 20 minutes burns 100 calories. Then 50% of 100 calories is 50 fat-calories burned.

Now say 10 minutes of interval training at a high intensity burns 160 calories. Well, 40% of 160 calories is 64 fat-calories burned.

By doing the high-intensity work, you've just burned 14 more fat calories in half the time. Starting to sound good? There's more...

Low-intensity exercise only burns calories while you are actually exercising. That means the moment you stop exercising, your caloric expenditure goes back down to nearly baseline levels. Within minutes, you're not burning many more calories than if you hadn't done anything at all.

High-intensity exercise, on the other hand, continues to boost your metabolism long after you're done (often up to 24 hours after, depending on the length and intensity of the training session). This means you're continuing to burn many more calories all day long!

Low-intensity exercise does nothing to build or support muscle mass. Maintaining muscle mass is critical to an effective fat-loss strategy as muscle burns fat just sitting there. Want to keep your metabolism working to burn fat? Do whatever you can to build or keep your muscle tissue.

High-intensity exercise has the potential to increase muscle mass. Compare the body of a top sprinter to a top marathon runner. The sprinter carries far more muscle mass. You won't get big bulky muscles from high intensity training but you will get shapely and more defined muscles!

How To Do It

Now that you've seen how effective high intensity training can be for fat loss, how is it done?

The absolute easiest way to start this type of training is to get on a cardio machine at the gym and select the interval training program. As you'll see, you'll start off with a fairly light warm-up cycle, then quickly jump up to a high intensity level for a short burst. You will then drop back down to a low level for a period of time, then back up to a high level again, repeated several times and finishing with an appropriate cool-down period.

The repetition of these intervals is the nuts and bolts of high intensity interval training. You can also do it manually by adjusting your intensity level up and down over short periods of time.

For example, do 30 seconds at high power then 30 seconds at low power. Repeat. It's very simple and very effective.

Another excellent method for doing high-intensity training is called aerobic interval training. It is essentially the same concept as the previously explained interval training but the work intervals are longer with the intensity level somewhat lower. A good example would be running at a pace that you can only keep up for about 5 minutes then walking for 2 minutes then running 5 more minutes, walking 2 minutes, etc.

High-intensity training can be applied to any form of cardiovascular exercise. Anything from walking/sprinting to swimming to bike riding will work perfectly. I would recommend doing his type of training 2 to 3 times per week for best results. As always, be sure to consult with your physician before starting any exercise program.

Remember, what you get out of exercise is directly proportional to what you put in. Work at high-intensity training for awhile and see just how much better your fat-loss efforts go.

Do u want to make a nuclear engineer in India?

Equipment failure, nuclear meltdown and release of radioactive material as a result of the Japan earthquake brought worldwide criticism for the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant disaster. This steered the world back to the age-old debate on the benefits of nuclear technology.
Many international bodies advocated closing down nuclear plants. But everything has its advantages and nuclear debates brought to light the many benefits of developing nuclear energy. A world with more energy and less carbon emission, no electricity problems and better medical facilities, the advantages are clearly more.
Studying radioactive materials and radiation and learning how to use them in areas such as power and nuclear medicine forms the basis of nuclear engineering.
"India has no choice but to go in for nuclear energy in a big way. Renewable energy has to be encouraged to the maximum possible and there has to be a focus on the importance of nuclear energy to meet the country's requirement in the future. Students should be encouraged to develop a career in this field," explains Suhas Sukhatme, former Chairman, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, Government of India.
Nuclear engineering encompasses areas of the research, development, and application of nuclear energy and power plants. It also involves the handling of nuclear fuels and the safe disposal of radioactive wastes.
"Students interested in this field should have reasonable mathematical background and some technical programming skills. A B. Tech. or an M.Sc. degree is the basic educational qualification I would recommend to students who want to specialise in this field," explains Prabhat Munshi, Professor, Mechanical Engineering and Nuclear Engineering and Technology, IIT, Kanpur.
At present, nuclear engineering is studied as a specialisation and is offered at the postgraduate level. "A sound foundation in mathematics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer and a keenness for research are necessary," says Kannan Iyer, Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT, Bombay.
Job opportunities range from those at nuclear plants and government organisations to those in private firms. Fellowships are offered from the Nuclear Power Corporation of India and Atomic Energy Regulatory Board in India. The salary package ranges from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 7 lakh per annum.

See top 6 ways to low-intensity

Water workout

Taking to the water can provide a great workout and be ideal for people who are just starting out in fitness or working their way back after an injury. There are a variety of options, from a full aqua aerobic session to sessions consisting of walking on underwater treadmills – really it’s all about being active, but in the water.
The water supports your bodyweight (up to 85 per cent of it), minimizing the impact on your joints, making it suitable for people of any age, size or fitness level. The number of calories burnt is dependent on the depth of the water – the deeper the water, the more calories you will burn as more energy is required to push your body mass through water. On average, a half hour session in the water will burn around 200 calories – and even more should you add additional weights to your body.

Tai-Chi

At first sight, Tai Chi may not appear as the most taxing of workouts, yet the flowing
succession of slow and graceful movements can be a great calorie burner. Tai Chi is as low impact an exercise as you will find, yet a half hour session can burn on average 140 calories.
When done correctly, Tai-chi raises the heart rate significantly (to approximately 60 per cent of maximum) – enough to be classed as moderate exercise. In addition to the calorie burn, there are other benefits including improved strength, flexibility, concentration, and balance. And best thing of all is that Tai Chi can be done almost anywhere, anytime.

Get your skates on

In-line skating provides a great low impact workout which some studies have suggested provides the same level of aerobic activity as running or even riding a stationary bike. The calorie burn will depend on your size, the effort you put in, and the route you take, but it is estimated that half an hour skating could burn in excess of 200 calories.
Inline skating develops muscles in the entire upper leg, rear end and hip, as well as the lower back. Muscles in the upper arms and shoulders are also developed when arms are swung backwards and forwards while skating and you can increase your calorie burn just by swinging more vigorously.

Swimming

Swimming provides a great cardiovascular workout and is suitable for all due to the fact that it is non-load bearing with the water cushioning your joints as you swim. Breaststroke is the lowest intensity stroke and as such burns fewer calories – around 180 calories for a half hour session – but it’s a stroke that generally enables you to swim for longer and therefore burn more calories from a longer session.
Breaststroke expands the lungs, works the chest muscles and inner thigh, shoulders, triceps, legs and hamstrings – and some even swear it increases the size of your breasts! If you wish to swim other strokes to increase your calorie burn then half an hour of swimming burns the following: freestyle/front crawl – 300 calories; backstroke – 240 calories; and butterfly – 450 calories.

Yoga

Not only is yoga great for improving your strength, flexibility, muscle tone and reducing stress, it’s also a great calorie burner. Consisting of a series of deep-breathing exercises and ‘poses’ which are held for a set period of time, these can be adapted to suit  any fitness level. A typical half hour session will burn around 200 calories.
And the great thing is you can do a yoga workout with working up too much of a sweat which is great if you are really pushed for time. If you want try yoga of greater intensity to burn even more calories, then consider options like Bikram Hot Yoga, Power Yoga or Zero Gravity yoga.

Walking

Quite simply the easiest and most accessible form of workout is walking. Without the joint jarring that occurs when running, walking is a workout that can easily be fitted into your daily routine or added as a leisure pursuit during your free time. You can happily choose the intensity to work at which suits you.
If you are not used to a walking workout, then start with a short distance and walk at a pace that suits you.

You can easily crank up your speed and distance for improved calorie burn count. The number of calories burned will depend not only on your size, but also the speed you walk and the route you take. As an example, an average sized woman walking on a flat route at around 3mph will burn around 150 calories.

Note: calorie burn figures are approximate as they are dependent on bodyweight, the intensity of the workout, routines or routes followed and individual’s fitness level.

World safest car ‘Libyan Rocket’ by Muammar Gaddafi

Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has always been internationally recognised for his vibrant fashion sense, sleeping in Bedouin tents wherever he goes, wearing huge provocative buttons, being guarded by heavily armed women, just to name a few. An epitome of Gaddafi's eccentricity is the car he designed for himself, which Libya claims is the safest vehicle on earth. However, don't go into any details to back up the claim.

The Saroukh el-Jamahiriya, which means Libyan rocket, is a five-seater saloon with the nose and tail of a rocket and powered by a 230bhp V6. Launched at a conference called the Organization of African Unity and organized by Colonel Gaddafi in 2009, the Libyan Rocket comes with airbags, an electronic defense system and collapsible bumpers that supposedly help out in a crash.. Wonder what is an "electronic defense system"? Apparently, no one knows what it is or how it works.
Dukhali Al-Meghareff, chairman of the Libyan Arab Domestic Investment company which produced the prototype, touted it as revolutionary in automotive history. "The leader spent so many hours of his valuable time thinking of an effective solution. It is the safest car produced anywhere," said Mr Meghareff.

Cancer preventions- tips to reduce risk

It Is a matter of concern to see a steady rise in cancers among women in recent years. It is unfortunate that women in their 30s, who do not have any family history, are suffering from cancers unlike in the old days when cancer was considered an age-related ailment. Clearly, urban living is taking its toll. Simple preventive actions can reduce some of these risk factors. Environment
Pollution is known to be one of the contributors for cancer, for example, pesticides in farming.
Stay safe: Choose a relatively clean area to live in. Limit exposure to pollution by using non-polluting modes of transport like the underground. Find out the source of your produce, poultry and fish. Organic food is a good option.
Diet
A fat-rich diet can be a contributor to cancer. The younger generation swaps green leafy vegetables, dietary fibre and whole foods for fast, packaged, heat-and-eat food which contain additivies and preservatives (carcinogens).
Stay safe: Eat home-cooked food with plenty of fibre (35 g/day) and whole foods. Green leafy vegetables, pulses and oats are a good source of fibre. Avoid refined sugar, flour, white bread, pasta, fries and other fatty foods.
Lifestyle
Tobacco is a major contributor to head and neck cancers. It can affect other organs as well. Smoking is a major cause of cancers. Passive smoking is known to expose women to non-small cell lung cancers. Avoiding breastfeeding is counter-productive as is the use of unhygienic sanitary napkins (exposure to infection and cervical cancers). Certain oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) and hormone replacement therapies (HRTs) can make patients vulnerable to cancer (although recent studies have actually proved the opposite). Delayed age of conception and obesity are also considered risk factors.
Stay safe: Stop smoking, plan your family early and make it a point to breastfeed your baby. Consult your gynaecologist before considering OCP and HRT. Make sure you exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight.
My top tip: Move to clean, organic food; adopt a healthy lifestyle and schedule an annual check-up especially if you are above 40. You pay more upfront, but the costs are lower in the long term.

Tips on how to Keep the weight off when your diet is over

Staying at the number one spot is often more difficult than reaching it, and it’s a similar story with dieting. The hardest thing may not be losing those extra kilos but making sure they don’t come back.
Diets, protein and health

Some of the healthy eating regimes regularly featured in women’s magazines, especially as summer approaches, are far from being fad diets. And from the prevention of health risks associated with being overweight and worries about obesity, to the obsession with being thin, there are many different reasons for dieting.

Real risks exist however, and some of the star diets (like the Dukan, Atkins etc.) could provoke various deficiencies, which are potentially harmful to health. Even worse, according to a recent American study, diets based on a high intake of animal protein could actually increase the risk of mortality. And to top it all off, according to a recent French report, 8 out of 10 people who follow such a diet will put the weight back on in the space of a year!
Overall, it’s difficult to know which diet method to follow. However, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine1, it might be possible to avoid putting the weight back on after a weight loss programme, as long as you follow the way of eating afterwards…

Successful dieting to begin with…

As part of a large-scale European Commission funded project, a study was led over six months with the objective of finding a diet regime that would help prevent obesity. The study in question is called DIOGenes, for ‘Diet, Obesity and Genes’ 2.
The method used was relatively simple: initially, a low calorie diet was followed by people deemed to be overweight (with an average BMI of 34). The same people then tried out different other types of diets so that the impact on how they managed to maintain their target weight could be measured afterwards.
In this way, 938 people from 8 different countries (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Spain, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom) followed a diet for 8 weeks whereby the daily amount of calories was based on 800kcal (up to 1000kcal maximum).
As a reminder, the recommended calorie intake for a normal diet is around 2000kcal, even though it can vary considerably according to gender, age, weight and level of physical activity (an inactive women of 38 does not have the same requirements as a sporty 20 year old man etc.).
In practical terms, this low calorie diet consisted of food substitute meals as well as a daily portion of 400g of fruit or vegetables. It is important to note that the substitute meals conformed to the European Commission health guidelines.3
At the end of the study, out of the 938 participants, 773 completed the 8-week diet, showing an average weight loss of 11kg, each of them having lost an average of 8% of their starting weight.

The best ‘after-diet’ diet…

Once the desired weight was reached, the participants were divided into 5 groups: one control group, and four others in which the diets varied in terms of GI, and carbohydrate and protein intakes. These diets were then followed for 26 weeks, totalling six months.
Of course, the participants were not left to fend for themselves; they had the support of a dietician (every week for six weeks, and then once a month after this). It is interesting to note that one of the truly original aspects of this study was that participants included families as well as individuals. Researchers were of the opinion that if the whole family kept to the same diet, the participants would adhere to the regime more successfully. More than this, recipes and advice for cooking were passed around in families.
Out of the 773 participants who completed the six months, only 548 assiduously followed the diet regime assigned to them. After analysing the results, researchers found that the low GI and/or high protein diets prevented participants from regaining weight (just less than 1kg on average in six months).
Prof Arnes Astrup at the University of Copenhagen, and coordinator of the DIOGenes study, explains: “This confirms that the choice of diet after a period of slimming plays an important role in maintaining the target weight. Above all, it proves that there is value in a high protein intake during and after a diet, and that it can avoid muscle wastage and encourage the feeling of being full.”

Are high protein diets dangerous for your health?

The problem is that ‘high-protein’ diets have not had good press recently, and consumers are asking many legitimate questions about their safety. They sound like a good way to lose weight and stay thin, but at what overall price for health?
The French food safety authority (Anses) has pointed the finger at high protein diets, outlining the risks of deficiency in essential nutrients as well as the risk of a yo-yo effect (rapidly losing and gaining weight). Another study, American this time, underlines the dangers of animal protein in such diets, instead advocating diets that are based on more vegetable proteins.
In a weight loss diet or during a regime to stabilise weight, the essential thing is not just to get enough protein in order to feel full, but also enough other foods to protect health – such as GI foods, like fruit, pulses and oleaginous fruit and nuts.
So the bottom line appears to be that ‘high-protein’ works to keep weight off, but too much animal protein can have negative health effects… so what should you do? Get out the nuts, seeds, wholegrains and pulses, and boost your post-diet protein intake without unreasonably increasing animal protein intake (meat, dairy).

Why people in the North have bigger brains?

LONDON (Reuters) - People from northern parts of the world have evolved bigger brains and larger eyes to help them to cope with long, dark winters and dim skies, scientists said on Wednesday.
Researchers from Oxford University studied the eye sockets and brain capacity of 55 human skulls from 12 different populations across the world and found that the further human populations live from the equator, the bigger their brains.
It's not because they are smarter, however, but because they need bigger vision areas in the brain to cope with the low light levels at high latitudes, the scientists said in a report of their findings in the journal Biology Letters.
"As you move away from the equator, there's less and less light available, so humans have had to evolve bigger and bigger eyes," said Eiluned Pearce from Oxford's School of Anthropology, who led the study. "Their brains also need to be bigger to deal with the extra visual input.
"Having bigger brains doesn't mean that higher latitude humans are smarter, it just means they need bigger brains to be able to see well where they live."
The skulls used in the study dated back to the 1800s and included samples from indigenous populations of England, Australia, Canary Islands, China, France, India, Kenya, Micronesia, Scandinavia, Somalia, Uganda and the United States.
The researchers plotted the volume of the eye sockets and brain cavities against the latitude of the central point of each individual's country of origin and found that the size of both the brain and the eyes could be directly linked to the latitude of the country.
Oxford's Robin Dunbar, who also worked on the study, said the results showed the speed at which humans had evolved to cope with the challenges of new habitats.
"Humans have only lived at high latitudes in Europe and Asia for a few tens of thousands of years, yet they seem to have adapted their visual systems surprisingly rapidly to the cloudy skies, dull weather and long winters," he said.
The researchers said that from measuring the brain cavity, the study suggested the biggest brains belonged to populations who lived in Scandinavia, and the smallest belonged to Micronesians.

Today Apple has more cash than US government

New York, July 29 (IANS) As of today, Apple boss Steve Jobs is richer than Uncle Sam.

While the world's most powerful government has just $73.76 billion in its reserves, the world's top technology company has a neat cash pile of $75.87 billion Thursday.

The US Treasury Department Thursday warned that it has now only this much operating budget as Republicans and Democrats fight over raising the nation's debt ceiling. With only that much reserve at its disposal, the Obama White House has warned the Republicans that the US government won't be able to meet its obligations as of Aug 2.

Facing a government default, Obama can definitely turn to Steve Jobs to give him a very brief breathing space.

The failure by the Republicans and Democrats to come to a compromise to raise the current $14.3 trillion debt ceiling by Aug 2 could lead to a hike in interest rates. The already battered dollar may also plunge further.

With its market capitalisation of $363.25 billion, Apple is the second largest company on the planet after American oil giant Exxon Mobil. The Cupertino-based Apple started rising suddenly in 2007 when it entered the smart phone market with the launch of its first version of the iPhone.

Within three years, Apple went on to overhaul BlackBerry company Research In Motion (RIM) which invented the smart phone and dominated the market.

But its fortunes skyrocketed last year with the launch of the iPad tablet which has sold in millions. In fact, the iPhone and the iPad have made Apple the czar of mobile computing technology as rivals play up catch-up.

The stock of the company, which doesn't pay dividends, has now touched $400.

After Apple, another non-financial company sitting on a huge cash reserve is Microsoft whose own pile is about $40 billion.

Must see top 10 European beaches

1. Best for British romance
We're so spoilt for choice in the British Isles with some truly beautiful beaches so it was tough to pick just one, but we've plumped for Camber Sands. Why? Well, as romantic beaches go, it's hard to beat Camber, which has several miles of beautiful golden sand, and endless secluded spots to curl up together and canoodle in the marram grass...
East Sussex

2. Best for surfing
If you've always fancied learning how to make like a surfer, but don't want to risk erratic waves or cold water, then Portugal is the place to be, boasting over 500 miles of coastline with warm and relatively reliable waves. Head down to the Peniche peninsula, about 90 minutes' drive from Lisbon (unbelievably just a couple of hours' flight from the UK), which has gorgeous golden beaches and a host of surf schools.
Visit Portugal

3. Best for families
Tired of fighting for space on well-known child-friendly beaches? Try taking a trip to Denmark, which is surrounded by gloriously clean white sand beaches with fairly shallow water – perfect for little ones. Take the car and travel overnight by ferry to Esbjerg which is just an hour away from Legoland, and a ten-minute ferry journey from Fanø, a little island with some absolutely wonderful beaches which are usually blissfully peaceful!
DFDS Seaways

4. Best for stunning views
OK, so when you think of Iceland, beaches don't usually spring to mind, which is why Reynisfjara beach is such a gem. If you're looking to spend the day splashing around in the sea, pick another beach! No matter how sunny it gets (and summer temperatures can reach 20°C) the sea will be relatively chilly, but the attraction of this black volcanic sand-and-pebble beach is the view. So bring a sweater and don't forget your camera. To one side of the beach are amazing basalt columns that rise up from the shoreline like a church organ's pipes, and to the other is a stunning rock arch and one of Iceland's largest glaciers.
Visit Iceland

5. Best for car-free quiet
Visit the south of France to experience a little-known French summer secret, the Iles d’Hyères, three small islands in the Mediterranean sea, around 50 miles off the coast of St Tropez. Leave your car on the mainland and take the ferry over the Ile de Port-Cros, a protected National Park with a sprinkling of hidden coves and clear waters. Sandy beaches, shady trees and no honking horns or car fumes. Bliss!
Hyeres Les Palmiers

6. Best for pretending you're in the Caribbean
If you really don't fancy a long-haul flight but desperately want to experience crystal-clear waters, dazzling white sand and a taste of the good life, then why not go to Corsica? The beach at Palombaggia is famous for its incredibly clear water which is a real pleasure to swim in. Enjoy fabulous French cuisine on the beach, under the shade of the pine trees, watching the sun sparkle on the sea.
Visit Corsica

7. Best for foodies
San Sebastian in the Spanish Basque country is blessed with an almost perfect crescent-shaped beach, La Concha, right in the heart of this bustling city. The Concha beach is a glorious mix of families, morning-after-the-night-before party types resting behind huge sunglasses, and locals popping by for a swift lunchtime paddle. Best of all, it's seconds away from the Parte Vieja, where you'll find all the best (and most delicious) pintxos bars, the Basque version of tapas. Mmmmm.
San Sebastian Turismo

8. Best for glamorous beach babes
If you feel like some high-maintenance beach shenanigans, head to Croatia to the stylish island of Hvar. Croatia is blessed with clear waters which stay warm all summer long and the beaches are shaded with fragrant pine trees. You can hire anything from a basic sun-bed for one, to a whole private pontoon for six, with a 'baldachini' - a chiffon-draped four poster bed at the Bonj Les Bains beach club, where you might spot stars like Nicky Hilton and Kevin Spacey.
Suncani hvar hotels

9. Best for scuba divers
Sometimes the best fun to be had at the beach is in the water. One of the best scuba dives, possibly in the world, not just Europe, is the very unusual Zenobia in Cyprus. Head to Larnaca, which has four scrupulously clean Blue Flag beaches, and go a little out of town to McKenzie beach to escape the crowds. The Zenobia was a huge ferry which sank on its maiden voyage. The submerged ferry is around 1.5km from shore and starts at 15m and descends to 45m. There are some superb swim-throughs and the visibility is great.
Discover Larnaca

10. Best for sand
Did you know that Europe has a desert? You can find it in Almeria, southern Spain, and if it looks familiar, it's because 'Lawrence of Arabia' was filmed there, along with endless spaghetti westerns. The beach at nearby Monsul has wind-rippled dunes and a sea that is warm enough to swim in year-round. It can get incredibly hot here, so make sure that you stay out of the sun at noon and keep your skin protected.

Venkataraman great son of India: Ansari

..New Delhi, July 30 (IANS) Eulogising former president R. Venkataraman on the occasion of his birth centenary celebrations, Vice President Hamid Ansari Saturday said that he was a great son of India and remained a shiny example worthy of emulation.

'It is a privilege to attend a function commemorating the birth centenary of a great son of India. The late president Ramaswami Venkataraman had an extraordinary career in public life as an eminent lawyer, trade union leader, parliamentarian and statesman,' Ansari said.

'Venkataraman-ji believed in the Gandhian dictum that 'self-government is not a substitute for good government',' he added.

The vice president said that Venkataraman believed that doing the right thing was more important than catering to personal preferences or seeking popularity.

Congress leader Shivraj Patil, former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi and Venkataraman's daughter Lakshmi Venkataraman Venkatesan were also present on the occasion at the India International Centre.

'He knew the tapestry of world politics and international relations from the perspective of India. He was upright without being sanctimonious. He knew how to wield authority without flaunting it,' Gopalkrishna Gandhi said.

Pakistan puts travel curbs on US diplomats

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan has placed new travel restrictions on American diplomats living in the country, a U.S. official said Saturday, in the latest sign of the breakdown in ties between Islamabad and Washington since the U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

Pakistan reacted furiously to the May 2 bin Laden raid deep inside the country because it was carried out with no warning to authorities in Islamabad. The fallout battered an already frayed relationship seen as key to the fight against al-Qaida and Washington's hopes of reaching a settlement in Afghanistan and withdrawing troops.

Islamabad sent home at least 90 U.S. soldiers training Pakistani troops in counterinsurgency and severely cut back on intelligence cooperation. The Obama administration, which took office pledging to strengthen ties with Islamabad, announced it was cutting more than one-third of its military aid to the country.

While Washington's large civilian aid program has been unaffected, the move to restrict diplomats' movements adds a new irritant to the relationship and suggests military-to-military tensions are bleeding into the civilian sphere.

A letter from the Foreign Ministry sent to the American Embassy last month states that all of its diplomats must now apply for special permission to leave the capital five days in advance of travel, including visits to cities where America has consulates.

Such curbs appear to be an unusual step between friendly states. The 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations requires host states to allow foreign diplomats "freedom of movement" in the country except for restricted areas. Other foreigners living in Pakistan are free to travel around most of the country.

There are ways, however, to restrict the movement of diplomats without violating the convention.

The letter, dated June 13, was obtained by The Associated Press on Saturday. The AP obtained a second letter dated this month from the Civil Aviation Authority to security officers at Benazir Bhutto International Airport instructing them to carry out the Foreign Ministry order.

A U.S. official confirmed the new restrictions and said the embassy was working with the government to resolve the issue. He did not give his name because of the sensitivity of the relationship at present.

It was unclear if other foreign missions in Islamabad had also received a similar notice.

In response to a question, the Foreign Ministry released a statement saying that no "U.S.-specific restrictions have been applied." It said Pakistan was fully mindful of its obligations under the Vienna Convention and was discussing the issue with the embassy.

Earlier this month, at least one carload of American diplomats was refused entry to Peshawar, the main northwestern city. Other diplomats have been able to travel unhindered outside Islamabad since the letter was sent, the American official said.

The United States is nominally a partner with Pakistan, but many Pakistanis, including those in the government, media and armed forces, regard it with mistrust or hostility. The bin Laden raid, and the shooting deaths of two Pakistani men by a CIA contractor in January, were taken as more signs that Washington has malevolent intentions in the country.

The fact that bin Laden had been hiding in an army town close to the capital only reinforced suspicions in Washington that Pakistan was an unreliable partner in the fight against al-Qaida. There are also growing frustrations with Islamabad over its refusal to act against powerful militant factions in the northwest that are killing U.S. troops in Afghanistan but pose no immediate threat to Pakistan.

'Facebook, Twitter creating self-obsessed people'

London, July 30 (IANS) Social networking websites Facebook and Twitter have created a generation obsessed with themselves, having short attention spans and a child-like desire for constant feedback on their lives, says an Oxford scientist.

According to Baroness Greenfield, professor of pharmacology at Oxford University, the growth of internet 'friendships' as well as greater use of computer games could effectively 'rewire' the brain.

She says this can lead to reduced concentration, a need for instant gratification and poor non-verbal skills, such as the ability to make eye contact during conversations.

Repeated exposure to social networking sites leaves users with an 'identity crisis', the Daily Mail reported the scientist as saying.

Baroness Greenfield, former director of research body the Royal Institution, said: 'What concerns me is the banality of so much that goes out on Twitter.'

'Why should someone be interested in what someone else has had for breakfast? It reminds me of a small child (saying): 'Look at me Mummy, I'm doing this', 'Look at me Mummy, I'm doing that'.

She said that some Facebook users feel the need to become 'mini celebrities' who are watched and admired by others on a daily basis. They do things that are 'Facebook worthy' because the only way they can define themselves is by 'people knowing about them'.

'It's almost as if people are living in a world that's not a real world, but a world where what counts is what people think of you or (if they) can click on you,' she said.

'Think of the implications for society if people worry more about what other people think about them than what they think about themselves.'

Bush finally response to 9/11 terror attacks

Bush finally 'comes clean' on his 'emotionless' response to 9/11 terror attacks

Washington, July 30 (ANI): Former US President George W. Bush has explained as to why he seemed to have no response when he was informed about the attack on the World Trade Center.

In a rare interview about the attacks, Bush told the National Geographic Channel what was going through his mind when he was informed about the attack.

Bush was sitting with a group of children when he said he saw reporters at the back of the room getting the news on their cellphones, which he described as like 'watching a silent movie,' The Daily Mail reports.

"My first reaction was anger. Who the hell would do that to America? Then I immediately focused on the children, and the contrast between the attack and the innocence of children," Bush was quoted, as saying.

Then his chief of staff Andy Card informed him that a second had hit the World Trade Center. Bush said he realized a lot of people beyond that classroom would be watching for his reaction.

"So I made the decision not to jump up immediately and leave the classroom.

I didn't want to rattle the kids. I wanted to project a sense of calm. I had been in enough crises to know that the first thing a leader has to do is to project calm," Bush said.

In the hour-long interview, which will be broadcast on August 28, Bush also said that visiting 'Ground Zero' was like 'hell'.

"From the air it looked like a giant scar. But when I actually got to the site, it was like walking into hell," Bush has said in the interview. (ANI)

"I am elated to be back at doing what I do best - Entertain! My audience loves me and so do I. See why do stars love tattoo?

The latest buzz doing the rounds in the media is about the tattoo that Shah Rukh Khan sports in his upcoming movie Don2.

The ‘D’ tattoo that will be seen on his arm, in the film, has been registered for copyright protection against his name. With the great deal of interest surrounding Shah Rukh’s tattoo in ‘Don 2’,
we take a look at the B-town stars that have got permanently inked.

Sanjay Dutt
The actor has not one but multiple tattoos on his body. In fact, Sanjay Dutt has a tattoo fetish keeps getting new tattoos every once in a while. Presently the actor has been sporting a bald look for the ‘Agneepath’ remake and with the numerous tattoos that he has, he looks even more ferocious.

Arjun Rampal
Arjun Rampal shows what an ideal father he is by sporting two tattoos with the names of his two daughters Mahikaa and Myra on his arms.
Saif Ali Khan
Saif Ali Khan probably has the most famous tattoo in Bollywood history. His ‘Kareena’ tattoo in Hindi, bearing an uncanny resemblance to David Beckham’s ‘Victoria’ tattoo, also in Hindi, created waves in the country. He had the entire nation wanting to have a glimpse of his open declaration of love for ladylove, Kareena Kapoor.
Deepika Padukone
Deepika got her nape inked with an ‘RK’ tattoo as a testimony to her fabled love story with Ranbir Kapoor. The relationship, however, hit the rough patch and they went their own separate ways. Despite their break-up, the tattoo stayed as Deepika was graceful enough to accept it as a part of her life.

Akshay Kumar

Akshay Kumar sports an angelic tattoo on his back which reads his son Aarav’s name. The actor even had his character in the film ‘Blue’ named Aarav so as to make the tattoo look relevant.

Esha Deol

She doesn’t have a great Bollywood career to boast of but she does have an interesting tattoo to flaunt. Esha Deol has the Gayatri Mantra inscribed on one side of her back and an ‘Om’ tattoo on the other. Esha was one of the earlier actors who got themselves tattooed.

Hrithik Roshan

Hrithik Roshan, like others, caught the tattoo fever and, along with his wife, got the Solomon seal- a six point star tattooed on his forearm. Soon after, Hrithik got his wife Susanne’s name inscribed on his wrist as a sign of his undying love for her. This shows Hrithik to be an ideal husband, which most girls would want to have for themselves.
